The device, known as the Factory of the Future 1.0, was constructed on the University of Maine campus and integrates robotics, high-performance computing, and artificial intelligence.
US Senator Susan Collins of Maine declared it a “great day for our university, our state, and our nation,” while government representatives stated the printer “stands as a beacon of innovation” and exceeded their expectations.
The largest polymer 3D printer in the world, which holds the 2019 Guinness World Record and is capable of building homes, is located on the campus as well; however, the new device is reportedly four times larger.
The institution hopes to demonstrate how a printer with a smaller carbon footprint can be used to build almost all of a home.
According to the statement, it enables them to advance 3D-printed homes technology by employing bio-based materials to eventually print neighborhoods with reasonably priced homes in order to combat homelessness in the area.
