After Thursday’s contest, the party’s candidate, Chris Webb, received 10,825 votes, or 58.9% of the total vote. The Conservatives came in far last with just 3,218 votes.
In Wales and England, local elections coincided with the by-election.
Labour seized control of some local councils where voters in the 2016 referendum largely supported Brexit as the results came in.
But in the upcoming hours and days, hundreds of seats, together with 10 mayoralties and 37 commissioners of police and crime, are still to be announced.
