The 24-year-old Anton Peraire-Bueno and the 28-year-old James Peraire-Bueno are charged with money laundering and wire fraud.
According to the US Department of Justice, this is the first theft of its sort.
The prosecution also charges the two, who are said to have attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), with carrying it out in April 2023.
“The Peraire-Bueno brothers stole $25 million in Ethereum cryptocurrency through a technologically sophisticated, cutting-edge scheme they plotted for months and executed in seconds,” said Lisa Monaco, Deputy Attorney General.
She said that Internal Revenue Service (IRS) agents had successfully untangled the “first-of-its-kind wire.”
