In a rare interview, Pope Francis corrected his questioner about the Catholic Church’s stance on same-sex couples, stressing that he allows individual blessings but not same-sex unions.
In an interview with “60 Minutes,” the Pope was challenged about what appeared to be a shift in Vatican doctrine when he allowed the blessings of Catholics in same-sex relationships, despite the fact that the Church considers marriage as an indissoluble union between a man and woman.
“Last year, you decided to allow Catholic priests to bless same-sex couples, “60 Minutes” journalist Norah O’Donnell explained. “That’s a significant difference. Why?”
“No, what I permitted was not to bless the union. That cannot be done because it is not a sacrament. I cannot. The Lord made it.
