In an amicus brief submitted to the Supreme Court, a group of 27 prominent Republican prosecutors urged the court to consider a Mexican government lawsuit seeking to hold American gun manufacturers accountable for gun-related crimes committed by cartels.
On Tuesday, Montana Attorney General Austin Knudsen and Republican colleagues petitioned the court to consider the case in order to prevent “a foreign sovereign’s use of American courts to effectively limit the rights of American citizens.”
The case stems from a complaint that the Mexican government filed in 2021, claiming that American gun manufacturers—such as Ruger, Smith & Wesson, and others—should be held liable for gun violence committed by cartels operating south of the border because their products were known to be weapons.
