Mr. Sunak’s announcement put an end to months of debate over the UK’s election date.
What is a general election, and how many MPs exist?
The general election elects Members of Parliament (MPs) to the House of Commons.
The UK is divided into 650 constituencies, each of which elects one MP to represent local inhabitants.
The majority of candidates are affiliated with a political party; however, others run as independents.
How does voting work?
In a general election, everyone has one vote.
On election day, registered voters in each constituency vote for their preferred candidate at a local polling location. Some individuals vote by it.
