ISLAMABAD/LAHORE: against Thursday, Punjab Governor Sardar Salim Khan urged the provincial government to examine the recently passed legislation against defamation.
Speaking on the Capital Talk segment of Geo News, Governor Khan stated that the Punjab Assembly’s defamation bill needs to be reviewed because it is not the final word.
He suggested that the Punjab administration go over it again and strike out any offensive language.
The governor of Punjab further stated that the defamation bill has created a tempest in the nation and that, if necessary, he will attempt to resolve it by meeting with all parties involved.
The Punjab Defamation Bill 2024 was enacted by the Punjab Assembly on Monday in the face of a loud and intense protest by the opposition after it was tabled by Punjab’s Finance and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Mujtaba Mian Shuja-ur-Rehman despite media bodies’ requests to defer the legislation.
The governor can refer the bill back to the assembly for reconsideration, and if the assembly sends it back to the Governor House again, it will assume the shape of the law within a stipulated period even if the governor does not give assent to the bill.
