LAHORE: Six years after a court decision had forced Nawaz Sharif from office, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) elected him as the party’s president “unopposed” on Tuesday.
As a result of the Panama Papers ruling, Nawaz lost both the prime ministership in 2017 and the leadership of his party in 2018. Since then, the PML-N has developed a narrative around the slogan “mujhy kyun nikala” (Why was I removed?), which refers to the former prime minister.
Nonetheless, Nawaz was re-elected as the party president today because no other party official filed to challenge the party supremo for the top position.
