In support of Babar Azam leading the Pakistani team in the Twenty20 World Cup, former Australian cricketer Ricky Ponting has stated that the Green Shirts may do well in the major international competition.
Azam is a capable captain who can lead Pakistan to success in the T20 World Cup, according to Ponting.
Ponting said to The ICC Review, “Captaincy just sits well with some people and it doesn’t sit well with others.”
Over the years, it has been evident that some of the greatest players to have ever played the game have not always made the finest leaders. Instead, what sets some of the greatest players apart from the rest is their unwavering concentration on improving themselves.
And that’s not something you can do as a captain. You must truly separate your work, take care of yourself, and take care of the guys in your immediate vicinity. Thus, some guys are more adept at handling that than others.
“As a leader, Shaheen didn’t exactly blow everyone away, so I believe that when we go back to the World Cup, a team with a captain like Babar instead of Afridi just seems more established.”
Ponting, however, gave kudos to the young player Saim Ayub, who opened the match against Ireland in the most recent Twenty20 International series alongside Mohammad Rizwan. The “real star in the making” was Ponting’s description of him.
