At least four people were killed and numerous more were injured in a shooting incident that happened near a mosque in Muscat, the capital of Oman. This is an unusually violent incident for the Gulf state.
A foreign media outlet said later that day that security personnel had killed three people who were suspected of carrying out the attack. The cause of the incident is still being investigated, according to Omani authorities, and a search and arrest operation is in place to apprehend any other suspects.
In addition, the Omani authorities assert that one police officer was among the six victims. They stated that 28 people had been hurt.
Imran Ali, Pakistan’s ambassador to Oman, told Samaa TV that the attack happened early on Tuesday morning in Muscat’s quiet Wadi al-Kabir neighborhood. It was directed towards an Imambargah where worshippers had gathered for religious ceremonies. According to him, gunmen opened fire above the Imambargah, killing four people—two of whom were Pakistanis—and wounded roughly seventy more, the majority of whom were also citizens of Pakistan.
