The traditional elder assembly known as the Bannu Aman Jirga wrapped up its meeting at the chief minister’s residence in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and made 11 major demands intended to increase security and stability in the area.
Representing the interests of the people in the area, the jirga expressed strong opposition to Operation Azm-e-Istehkam and demanded more effective ways to deal with the Taliban presence.
Main Requirements for Operation Azm-e-Istehkam: The recently announced military action was met with opposition from the jirga, who declared it unacceptable.
Removal of the Taliban presence: The jirga placed a strong emphasis on the necessity of removing the good and evil Taliban as well as their centers.
Increased police powers: They requested that police patrolling units be given greater power at night, including the ability to act immediately while on patrol.Respect for civilian spaces: A compelling argument was made against searching houses and schools while desecrating them, emphasizing the ire and unhappiness these actions had caused among the local populace.
Limitations on Taliban movement: The jirga demanded rigorous measures to stop the Taliban’s movement and called for swift action to be taken against them.
Local administrative authority: It was requested that the ability to take action against the Taliban as soon as they are sighted be granted to local administrations.
Regarding missing persons: In an effort to bring about justice and transparency for the impacted families, they implored the authorities to present the missing people and pertinent documentation in court.
