A wheel-jam strike by freight transporters is scheduled to begin on July 25.
The Goods Transporters Association declared a planned wheel-jam strike against the unmet requests and challenges from the transport sector during a news conference on Tuesday in Gujranwala.
Important requests and worries
Before they resume regular operations, the goods carriers have outlined a number of important criteria that they would want to see met. They’ve said that until their demands are satisfied, no reservations or deliveries will be handled.
- The transporters want Pakistan to adopt a uniform weight measurement system. They contend that the transportation sector faces difficulties and discrepancies as a result of the inconsistent weight requirements. The group has asked that patrolling police lose their ability to challenge people. They have expressed dissatisfaction at needless challenges issued by the traffic, patrol, and highway police.
- Transporters drew attention to the problem of steep fines, pointing out that items being transported from Karachi to Gujranwala might result in penalties of up to Rs50,000. They contend that this is cumbersome and excessive.
- There is a demand that customs officials stop what they refer to as “illegal checking” of merchandise. The transporters feel that these audits are unjust and interfere with their business.
- The impending wheel jam strike will seriously impede the flow of commodities around the nation, affecting supply chains and perhaps causing shortages and delays in a number of industries.
