The Punjab Police have made a number of arrests in connection with robberies, murders, rapes, and other major crimes. Nevertheless, a lot of those who are implicated get away with it because the inquiry process is so faulty.
In 52% of the cases, the Punjab Police have been unable to obtain challans.
Over the course of seven and a half months this year, police in 67,204 cases did not prosecute the accused. Many accused people are still being held on bail, even after 48% of the challans were filed. Experts blame the difficulties on insufficient police interest and poor investigations.
