The skies on Saturday weren’t as blue as many would have predicted, despite the fact that southern portions of the UK saw lots of sunshine.
This summer, wildfires have ravaged much of North America, uprooting thousands of people and taxing emergency agencies.
The UK’s skies have become “hazy” due to their smoke, causing their effects to be noticed over the Atlantic as well.
“You might have noticed the skies have been rather hazy this weekend, thanks to the jet stream carrying smoke from North America (mainly from Canadian wildfires) all the way across the Atlantic to our shores,” news meteorologist Kirsty McCabe said.
Fortunately, the smoke particles are so high in the atmosphere that they won’t affect our health, but they might improve this weekend’s sunsets and sunrises.”
According to Ms. McCabe, these kinds of things were “not unheard of,” and similar things happened all summer long the previous year.
She continued, “Unfortunately, heatwaves and droughts brought on by climate change are becoming more frequent, resulting in earlier, longer, and more intense wildfire seasons.”
The Canadian Rockies have seen a concentration of some of the worst wildfires.
