Tom Burke, who played Strike, will also star in the new adaptation as Arkadina, played by the Oscar winner.
Beginning in February, the production will be presented for six weeks at London’s Barbican Theatre.
Thomas Ostermeier, the film’s director, referred to Blanchett as a “once-in-a-generation actress”.
“Always a blessing”
Blanchett and Burke will reunite for the new adaptation; they recently wrapped up filming for Steven Soderbergh’s next picture Black Bag.
“I have known and admired Cate for many years, and to see her on stage is always a privilege,” Ostermeier said to News.
I’m overjoyed that this Barbican production of The Seagull will be our first artistic partnership and that London will get to see this once-in-a-generation actress in one of the best Arkadina parts ever.
“I’m also very pleased to be forging a new artistic relationship with Tom Burke, who will play the role of Trigorin.”
Two years ago, a different version of The Seagull, starring Emilia Clarke from Game of Thrones, was presented in London.
