Fears of a regional conflict escalation have been raised by the United States and Britain’s military incursions into Yemen in response to Houthi rebel attacks on ships in the Red Sea.
Hours after Friday’s attacks, which the rebels say killed five people, the Houthis threatened that all US and British assets have now become “legitimate targets”.
US President Joe Biden declared that the strikes came in response to the Houthis’ “unprecedented” attacks on commercial ships in the Red Sea and vowed to “not hesitate” to take more action if needed.
Regarding the attacks, Biden stated, “These targeted strikes are a clear message that the United States and our partners will not tolerate attacks on our personnel or allow hostile actors to imperil freedom of navigation.”
