In an effort to combat childhood obesity, sponsored web advertisements for junk food will be completely prohibited in addition to this.
Health Minister Andrew Gwynne stated that the timing for the new regulations is intended to “provide clarity” for businesses, fulfilling a pledge made in the Labour manifesto to enact the limits.
“These restrictions will help protect children from being exposed to advertising of less healthy food and drinks, which evidence shows influences their dietary preferences from a young age,” the ministry stated in a written statement confirming the intentions.
When Boris Johnson was prime minister in 2021, he promised to outlaw advertisements for unhealthy food before 9 p.m.
The policies, which would go into effect in October 2025, were announced by the Tories with the intention of reviewing their effects on businesses and consumers in light of the current crisis in the cost of living.
With the words, “This provides the clarity that businesses have been calling for and will support them in getting ready for the restrictions coming into force across the UK on 1 October 2025,” Mr. Gwynne affirmed that Labour would adhere to that timeframe.
