One of the riskiest things an astronaut may undertake while in orbit is a spacewalk.
Before the mission was declared to be “go for a spacewalk” and final safety inspections of the spacesuits and equipment were completed, it was postponed for around four hours this morning without any explanation.
The initial footage released from the Dragon capsule featured the four-person crew getting ready for the momentous occasion, as well as giving each other fist bumps.
The first person out of the capsule was 41-year-old billionaire Jared Isaacman, who became one of the select few spacewalkers, formerly limited to astronauts with professional experience.
A body camera captured his ascent through the small gap once he opened the hatch, and amazing footage showed the spacewalk happening to thunderous applause from mission control at Cape Canaveral, Florida.
As he slipped out of the spacecraft and into the vacuum of space, hundreds of miles from Earth, he exclaimed, “It’s gorgeous,” in amazement at what he could see.
He flexed his arms and legs, testing the durability of the new spacesuit, all the while keeping a hand or foot tethered to the capsule.
As he checked his spaces, he added that the hands-free demonstration is extremely similar to the trainer in terms of the foot constraint.
