She joked, “If somebody breaks into my house, they’re getting shot,” with host Oprah Winfrey on Thursday during a Michigan webcast.
The Democratic presidential candidate laughed and went on, “I probably shouldn’t have said that, but my staff will deal with that later.”
Harris reiterated her support for a ban on assault weapons after highlighting her gun ownership at the most recent presidential debate.
She said to Winfrey that kind of gun was “literally designed to be a tool of war”. “It has no place on the streets of a civil society.”
Harris acknowledged having owned a gun for “a while” in response to Winfrey’s question.
She made it clear that she supported the US Second Amendment, which safeguards the freedom to bear arms.
However, she continued by outlining her argument for a ban on assault weapons and bringing up the issue of school shootings in the US.
Harris called it “bone-chilling” that a child would have to go through a drill in case of such an incidence. She said, “It doesn’t have to be this way.”
