ISLAMABAD: Ahead of the elections on February 8, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) named Syed Asif Hussain to the important position, nearly a week after Omar Hamid Khan resigned from the position.
The development follows the approval of Khan’s resignation by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikander Sultan Raja. Khan was the electoral body’s secretary from July 2021 to January 2024, and the senior bureaucrat’s one-month notice period was waived.
Khan, a retired grade 22 officer of the Secretariat Group who held positions as national food security, special secretary of finance, and secretary of the Benazir Income Support Program (BISP) and national food security, had left the important position due to health concerns; the ECP confirmed that the senior officer was on medical leave as a result of certain health problems.
Khan had been sick for a few days, but the top electoral body had earlier confirmed in a statement that he would carry out his responsibilities if his health permitted it.
