It was up to the bullpens of both clubs to try and close the deal after brilliant outings on the mound by Guardians pitcher Matthew Boyd and Tigers starter Tarik Skubal.
When the Guardians added Emmanuel Clase to the game in the eighth inning, the score was tied at zero. Wenceel Perez lined out to conclude the eighth inning for Clase. Resuming for the ninth inning, Clase retired the first two batters facing the Tigers.
Kerry Carpenter batted for Detroit after two hits. On the sixth pitch from Clase, he launched a 423-foot bomb. It helped the Tigers take a 3-0 lead and win Game 2 in the end.
Carpenter went 1-for-2 with three RBI after pinch hitting for Justyn Henry-Malloy at first.
Skubal selected the “no” option. In his seven innings of work, he gave up three hits and struck out eight batters for the Guardians. Will Vest and Beau Brieske shut down their opponents the whole game, limiting Cleveland to three hits to help win.
Boyd saw action for Cleveland for 4 2/3 innings. He gave up just four hits.
The only other players with hits for the Guardians were Brayan Rocchio, Josh Naylor, and Steven Kwan, who made a spectacular catch in left field during the game.
