One of Pakistan’s most prominent politicians, Elahi Bux Soomro, was a former Speaker of the National Assembly. His death has been confirmed by family sources.
Soomro was born in the Jacobabad district in 1926. He was a member of the well-known Shikarpur Soomro family, which for a long time had a considerable political influence in Sindh.
He was Ahmed Mian Soomro’s brother and the son of Moula Bux Soomro. He was an engineer by trade.
During General Zia-ul-Haq’s administration, Soomro began his career as a minister in the federal government. In 1985, he was elected without opposition to the National Assembly.
