A representative of the National Institute of Health Islamabad’s Regional Reference Laboratory for Polio Eradication has reported that a wild poliovirus type-1 case was discovered in the Balochistani area of Quetta.
This year, there have been 33 cases of polio nationwide and three in the Quetta district. 17 instances from Balochistan, 10 from Sindh, 4 from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and 1 from each of Punjab and Islamabad have been registered thus far, the official stated.
Genetic sequencing has established a 99.66% correlation with the Quetta environmental sample that was gathered on April 23 of this year. This year, environmental samples from the Quetta block and district have repeatedly tested positive for WPV1, confirming the virus’s ongoing transmission and the harm it poses to young people.
