ISLAMABAD: On the suggestion of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, President Asif Ali Zardari signed the 26th Constitutional Amendment Bill into law on Monday after the parliament had approved the aforementioned legislation.
After the president signed the controversial bill into law, a gazette notice was released.
This comes after the ruling coalition was able to secure a two-thirds majority in the lower and upper houses, respectively, with 225 and 65 votes, to pass the extremely controversial judicial reforms through the Parliament.
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), which abstained from voting, rejected the judicial changes. As a result, the chief justice of Pakistan would henceforth be chosen by a legislative committee and hold office for a set term of three years.
