Pakistan’s National Task Force has begun extensive reforms in the power sector in accordance with the Prime Minister’s directions. The Task Force, which is led by Energy Minister Awais Leghari, consists of military and important government personnel.
The measures aim to reduce electricity costs, increase supply reliability, and create a competitive power market, according to Energy Minister Awais Leghari. Reform is essential given the sector’s growing cyclical debt, which has now surpassed $9.5 billion. In order to reduce costs and electricity rates, the government has started examining contracts with a number of Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and terminating out-of-date agreements.
Apart from lowering prices, the government is working to improve energy infrastructure and is moving forward with plans to privatize distribution firms.
