Authorities in eastern Indonesia have raised the warning level to the highest tier on their four-level scale after a series of eruptions from Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki have killed at least ten people.
Several communities had to be evacuated as a result of the eruptions, which happened overnight and blasted ash and lava into the surrounding areas.
Six deaths have been formally confirmed, according to Abdul Muhari, spokesman for the nation’s emergency management organization.
Video from the site showed settlements covered in thick ash, with fires burning in some places as lava struck wooden buildings and left pockmarks on the ground.
First soon before midnight, and then again at 1:27 AM and 2:48 AM local time, the volcano erupted many times.
