Even though there hasn’t been any cold weather, the cost of chicken meat and eggs has increased dramatically throughout the city, burdening the populace with growing expenses.
In the last week, the price of chicken meat has increased significantly by Rs130, from Rs530 to Rs660 per kilogram. In a similar vein, eggs are being sold in the retail market for Rs380 a dozen, which is significantly more than the official price of Rs344.
Local eggs are being sold for up to Rs650 a dozen in the wholesale market.
Retailers have blamed the increase on expected supply and demand shortages, but they caution that if the weather becomes colder in the upcoming weeks, prices could go up even more.
“The increase is largely driven by supply issues and preparations for colder months,”
