The Crime Survey for England and Wales estimates that in the year ending March 2024, 2.3 million people were victims of domestic violence. There were 712,000 men and slightly more than two-thirds women.
According to research from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), police reported 1.4 million cases of domestic violence, 39,000 of which led to criminal convictions.
Pilot programs for stricter domestic violence orders are being introduced, but charities caution that they are frequently worth “little more than the paper they are written on” unless the courts and police take action.
The former government enacted legislation in 2021 for the pilots of improved domestic abuse protection notices and orders (DAPNs and DAPOs), which will be tested in Greater Manchester.
