Authorities in Guinea, a country in west Africa, reported Monday that a crush of people during a soccer tournament had killed at least 56 people and injured numerous others.
The cause of the crush at a stadium in the southern city of Nzerekore is being investigated, according to a statement released by Information Minister Fana Soumah.
Videos posted on social media showed spectators rushing to leave the crowded arena.
In a previous statement, Prime Minister Bah Oury said, “The government regrets the incidents that marred the football match between the Labé and Nzérékoré teams this afternoon in Nzérékoré.”
