Volunteers at the food bank were taken aback to learn that a donated can of goods had expired precisely 25 years prior.
A glass can of Uncle Ben’s Gratin’s Dauphionise Cheese & Onion Sauce for Potatoes was recently given to volunteers at the Sunderland and County Durham Food Bank in Chester-le-Street, County Durham, England.
When a worker at the food bank was inspecting recently donated items, they noticed that the label was faded and the contents appeared “a little grey,” according to SWNS.

The employee looked closer and saw that the sauce had expired on June 9, 1998.
It was the oldest item Sutherland and Country Durham Food Bank had ever received, manager Jonathan Conlon told the British news agency SWNS.
GUARANTEEING IF YOUR SUNSCREEN IS OUT OF DATE
“We sometimes get things that are a couple of years out of date, and occasionally at harvest festival time, for example, we get things that people have cleared out from the back of their cupboards,” he explained.
According to Conlon, this cheese sauce has the potential to break records regarding the oldest expiration date of a donated item.
“It’s not that unusual to get the odd donation that is out of date, maybe a year or two — but this is the record,” he stated.
