According to The News, nuclear energy regained its position as Pakistan’s primary electricity source in December 2024, providing more over 26% of the country’s grid at a remarkably low cost of just over half a US cent per unit.
This demonstrates Pakistan’s transition to cleaner, more affordable energy sources and represents a continuous increase in the proportion of nuclear energy in the nation’s power mix.
2,065 gigawatt-hours (GWh), or 26.48% of the total electricity generated in December 2024, came from nuclear energy. Next in line were RLNG-based electricity (20.7%) and hydropower (22.8%). Nuclear continues to be a key component of Pakistan’s energy strategy because of its lower cost and environmental advantages, even in the face of rising prices for fossil fuel sources like natural gas and domestic coal.
