According to officials, a crush at the Hindu festival Kumbh Mela in northern India has killed at least 30 people. It is the largest religious gathering in the world.
The event happened early on Wednesday when other pilgrims hurrying to participate in a holy day of ceremonial washing trampled devotees on the riverbanks in Prayagraj.
According to authorities, another 60 persons were hurt. Official casualty counts were not released for the majority of the day, which led opposition leaders to accuse authorities of being opaque.
Those who lost loved ones received condolences from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Many pilgrims continue to look for updates on friends and family.
