An Australian lawmaker who first rejected a video of him snorting a white substance as a “deepfake” was found guilty of drug supply.
On Thursday, a judge in Adelaide fined former South Australian Liberal party leader David Speirs A$9,000 (£4311; $5,720) and mandated that he perform 37.5 hours of community service.
After News Corp. released video of Speirs snorting off a plate in September, he was taken into custody. He allegedly told the news source that it was a “deepfake” and that he had never used cocaine, and at first he denied any culpability.
He eventually acknowledged that was untrue, though, and his retirement from parliament was the result of the scandal and charges that followed.
