During renovations last year, a Dutch town hall acknowledged that it “most likely” disposed of 46 pieces of art by accident, including an Andy Warhol print of the last Dutch queen.
The artwork, which included a silkscreen print of Queen Beatrix from the 1980s valued at approximately €15,000 (£12,800), vanished last year while construction was underway on a town hall, according to the Maashorst municipality.
According to an inquiry, the artworks were kept in a basement while repairs were being done, and one of the possible causes of their eventual disposal was a lack of storage requirements.
“That’s not how you treat valuables,” Mayor Hans van der Pas said to Omroep Brabant, a public broadcaster. However, it did occur. We’re sorry about that.
