As two days of negotiations came to an end in Geneva, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Trade Representative Jamieson Greer announced on Sunday that they had reached an agreement with China to reduce the US trade deficit. They described “substantial progress” in high-stakes talks with Chinese officials, but they did not provide any specifics, according to Reuters.
Bessent informed reporters that US President Donald Trump was fully aware of the outcomes of the “productive talks” with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng and two Chinese vice ministers, and that specifics would be revealed on Monday.
Plans to lower China’s 125% tariffs on US goods and the retaliatory US tariffs of 145% on Chinese goods were not mentioned by Bessent and Greer.
Reporters were not allowed to ask them questions.
