On October 7, 2023, the 21-year-old was taken prisoner by Hamas militants while serving in the Israeli army at the Gaza border.
Israel temporarily suspended its military activities in Gaza on Monday in order to make the transfer possible. Prior to US President Donald Trump’s visit to the Middle East on Tuesday, a senior Hamas official told the BBC that the release was meant as a goodwill gesture and as part of efforts to achieve a new ceasefire agreement.
It is believed that Mr. Alexander was the last surviving US citizen detained by Hamas.
On his release, President Trump congratulated his family.
At an Israeli military base, television footage shows Alexander grinning while embracing his parents and siblings.
