Although there has been a “major deterioration” since October 2024, the most recent assessment from the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) indicated that famine is not currently taking place.
According to the report, the two-month ceasefire between Israel and Hamas “led to a temporary reprieve” in Gaza; however, any gains had been “reversed” by resumption of hostilities and an Israeli assistance blockade that has been in place since early March.
The report urged immediate action to stop the “increasingly likely” risk of famine and stated that 244,000 people were currently suffering from the most severe, or “catastrophic,” levels of food insecurity.
