Leaders from the UN, Europe, and the Middle East have denounced the action, which ministers said was meant to pressure Hamas into releasing the other hostages. Additionally, Israel charged Hamas of assistance theft, a charge the organization has refuted.
According to a UN assessment released on Monday, the blockade has resulted in acute shortages of food, medicine, and fuel, and the roughly 2.1 million people living in Gaza are at “critical risk” of starvation.
