Following a two-hour phone conversation with Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, US President Donald Trump declared that Russia and Ukraine will “immediately” begin talking toward a ceasefire and an end to the conflict.
Trump said the discussion went “very well” and added that the two sides would need to negotiate terms for a peace agreement.
Trump, who also spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, expressed confidence, but a ceasefire or peace agreement does not seem imminent.
While Zelensky stated that “this is a defining moment” and asked the US to stay involved in negotiations, Putin declared that he was prepared to work with Ukraine on a “memorandum on a possible future peace agreement.”
