NEW DELHI: Activists and attorneys have condemned the recent expulsions, claiming they are unlawful and based on ethnic profiling, after India deported hundreds of people to Bangladesh without trial, according to officials from both sides.
According to New Delhi, the deported individuals are undocumented migrants.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalist government has long maintained a strict stance against immigration, especially from Bangladesh, a country with a majority of Muslims. Top officials have called these immigrants “termites” and “infiltrators.”
The estimated 200 million Muslims in India are also alarmed by it, particularly those who speak Bengali, a language that is widely spoken in Bangladesh and eastern India.
