LAHORE: Following a protracted illness, Din Mohammad, the first wrestler from Pakistan to win an international gold medal, passed dead. He was more over a century old.
Din Mohammad, who comes from the Bata Pur neighborhood of Lahore, was honored to win Pakistan’s first gold medal at the 1954 Asian Games in Manila.
He won the top podium position in wrestling while representing the nation, defeating opponents from Japan, India, and the Philippines.
In addition to winning gold at the Asian Games, Din Mohammad proudly raised the national flag while representing Pakistan in multiple international competitions and winning a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games.
A spokesman for the Punjab Sports Board announced his death and remembered that Din Mohammad was the one who awarded Pakistan its first-ever gold medal at an international competition.
