Washington: According to a diplomatic cable, a person posing as US Secretary of State Marco Rubio called a number of foreign ministers and US officials last month using an AI-generated voice.
The spoof occurred in mid-June when the impostor contacted at least two of them over the Signal messaging app and left phony voicemails.
Additionally, the impostor attempted to initiate the secret chat by inviting the target to communicate on Signal through a text message.
According to officials, the goal was to fool victims with text messages and voices that sounded realistic in order to obtain private information or access to accounts.
The actor most likely wanted to obtain information or accounts by manipulating the targeted users using AI-generated text and audio messages.
