In a ruling that could result in tens of thousands of layoffs and fundamentally alter the federal bureaucracy, the US Supreme Court on Tuesday gave Donald Trump’s administration the go-ahead to seek widespread agency reduction and large government job cutbacks.
Trump’s executive order from February directing agencies to get ready for mass layoffs served as the basis for Tuesday’s decision. The administration is planning to cut employees at the US Departments of Agriculture, Commerce, Health and Human Services, State, Treasury, Veterans Affairs, and over a dozen other agencies under Trump’s order.
The court stated in a succinct, unsigned ruling that the Trump administration was “likely to succeed” in proving that his orders were within his lawful authority.
