Paris: Scientists warned on Wednesday that recent heatwaves in many European cities were up to 4 degrees Celsius hotter due to human-caused climate change, pushing temperatures into dangerous area for thousands of susceptible individuals.
A quick analysis of the incident by more than a dozen researchers from five European universities found that this probably resulted in a lot more heat-related deaths than would have happened in the absence of global warming.
As the first heatwave of the summer set records and prompted health warnings, temperatures in numerous European countries rose well beyond 40°C (104°F) between late June and early July.
Copernicus, the EU’s climate monitor, declared Wednesday that June was the hottest on record in western Europe, closing some tourist attractions and schools due to the extreme heat.
