According to the EU climate monitor Copernicus, “extreme” temperatures slammed Western Europe with brutal back-to-back heatwaves last month, making it the warmest June on record.
As the planet warms due to human emissions of greenhouse gases, this past June was the third warmest on record worldwide, continuing a recent hot trend.
According to the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), the hottest June on record occurred in 2024, and the second-hottest June occurred in 2023.
Extreme heat was especially noticeable in Europe, which is warming at a rate that is many times faster than the rest of the world.
