The warning was issued following at least 44 Palestinian deaths in the city from Israeli airstrikes, including over a dozen children.
In response to the impending ground invasion of the city, where over half of Gaza’s 2.3 million residents are seeking safety, Lord David Cameron expressed his “deep concern.”
It is a swarm of Hamas’s surviving strongholds, according to Israel.
The foreign secretary wrote on X that he was “deeply concerned about the prospect of a military offensive in Rafah – over half of Gaza’s population are sheltering in the area.”
“The priority must be an immediate pause in the fighting to get aid in and hostages out, then progress towards a sustainable, permanent ceasefire.”
Any Israeli ground offensive on Rafah, according to Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry, would have “disastrous consequences” and Israel’s ultimate goal is to drive the Palestinians from their land. Egypt has cautioned that the peace accord between it and Egypt, which dates back four decades, would be threatened by any Palestinian incursion onto its land.
Saudi Arabia issued a warning of “very serious repercussions,” and Qatar issued a similar dire warning.
