Following a 176-76 vote in parliament on Thursday, same-sex couples will now be able to lawfully adopt children.
Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the prime minister, declared that the new law would “boldly abolish a serious inequality”.
However, it has caused division in the nation due to strong opposition from the influential Orthodox Church. In Athens, its supporters staged a protest demonstration.
In Syntagma Square, the capital, many held crosses, carried banners, recited prayers, and sang Bible passages.
Archbishop Ieronymos, the leader of the Orthodox Church, declared that the proposal would “corrupt the homeland’s social cohesion”.
For the law to be approved by the 300-member parliament, a simple majority was required.
Numerous members of Mr. Mitsotakis’ center-right governing party opposed the law, which he had championed but needed the backing of opposition parties to pass.
“During a debate ahead of the vote, the prime minister told parliament that many children would finally find their rightful place with the people who have been invisible around us, who will finally be made visible.”
“The reform makes the lives of several of our fellow citizens better, without taking away anything from the lives of the many.”
