WASHINGTON: The US urged for a full and open examination of “any claims of interference or fraud” in Pakistan’s February 8 general elections, in accordance with Pakistani laws and procedures.
When asked about former Rawalpindi Division Commissioner Liaquat Ali Chatha’s bombshell rigging charges, US State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller called for an investigation.
“Any allegations of meddling or fraud must be thoroughly and honestly examined in accordance with Pakistan’s own laws and processes. Miller said, “And that, of course, includes this claim.”
When asked about the US position on recognizing the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) mandate, Miller stated that forming a new government was a “internal” Pakistani issue.
“But—so that’s a matter that I will leave to Pakistan. But as I said, when it comes to the – any claims of interference or allegations of irregularities, we want to see those fully investigated,” said the spokesperson.
