The letter was written by Chief Executive Nick Read to Justice Secretary Alex Chalk last month, one day before the government declared its intention to clear sub-postmasters implicated in the Horizon crisis.
Informing Justice Secretary Alex Chalk that the Post Office would be “bound to oppose” appeals against at least 369 charges, Chief Executive Nick Read wrote the letter to Chalk last month.
On January 9, the day before the government unveiled plans for a new law to clear and reward sub-postmasters wrongfully convicted in the Horizon crisis, the document was dated.
The Post Office released Mr. Read’s letter on Thursday, coinciding with the government’s announcement that it would move forward with measures to automatically overturn convictions by July.
The government responded by announcing that “safeguards” will be put in place to prevent “anyone who was rightly convicted” from trying to “take advantage” of the compensation plan.
