A startling rise in the number of fatalities is being caused by the extreme weather and protracted power disruptions that Karachi is currently experiencing. The son of well-known benefactor Abdul Sattar Edhi, Faisal Edhi, has highlighted the dire consequences of the current state of affairs and expressed grave concern over the growing death toll.
Faisal Edhi reports that an average of thirty to forty bodies are being received by the Edhi Foundation morgues each day, and that the number has increased dramatically over the last six days. The majority of the dead, he disclosed, came from regions badly impacted by load shedding.
Edhi also revealed that physicians frequently point the finger at other reasons for mortality rather than heatwaves when explaining deaths.
